Same Different Music Me project is a collaboration between Story is Connection (SIC)  and City of Maribyrnong, Phoenix Youth Centre.

This is a fantastic opportunity to unleash the artistic and creative side of you! You will have opportunities to collaborate with other music enthusiasts to create an immersive experience for wider audiences to better appreciate the authentic stories of international students.

Same Different Music Me Program 

1/ LIVE Connection Workshop/ Event Launch (October 2021)

Official launch of the event for all the participants to meet and greet.

SDM storytellers present their performance pieces to the musicians (both local and int) as part of a workshop. A dialogue between musicians and performers would be facilitated to explore points of identification and disconnection etc with material presented. Likewise, musicians could share their music and what drives this music. This dialogue will inform the next creative step. 

Catherine to mentor the connection between performer and musicians and from this relationship curate a presentation performance that combines music and performance. 

  • Date: Friday 29 October (6:00 – 8:00pm)
  • Venue: Zoom 
  • Duration: Approximately 2hr. 

2/ LIVE and Online Small Group Workshops (October – November 2021) 

Organise live and/ or online fortnight workshops that continue the creative exploration between performance and musicians. They are small group workshops that combine musicians and performers to prepare their pieces for presentation and are guided by the art director. Catherine to select the participants (SMD storyteller, local musician, Int musician) into groups of 2- 3. Expected to have 3 – 4 groups.

  • Date: (1st) Week 25 – 31 Oct and (2nd) Week 8-14 Nov
  • Venue: Depend on Covid-19 restriction either online through zoom or in person at Phoenix Youth Centre.
  • Duration: Approximately 2hr. 

3/ Theatre Rehearsal (December 2021 – January 2022)

December and January will be the rehearsal period when performers / artists will have meeting with Catherine in the theatre space at Phoenix Youth Centre to start getting familiarise themselves with the stage, lighting, and sound etc. Subjected to the restriction eased and the Phoenix centre opened.

  • Date: Tuesday 21 December 2021
  • Venue: Depend on Covid-19 restriction either online through zoom or in person at Phoenix Youth Centre.
  • Duration: Approximately 2hr. 

January Rehearsal

  • Date: Friday 28 Jan 2022
  • Venue: Depend on Covid-19 restriction either online through zoom or in person at Phoenix Youth Centre.
  • Duration: Approximately 2hr. 

4/ LIVE Performance at the Phoenix Youth Centre (February 2021)

Storytellers and musicians perform/present their discoveries. An audience of international students and the wider community would be invited to watch and join the conversation in relation to material presented.

  • Date: 18 February 2022 (6:00pm – 8:00pm) 
  • Venue: Phoenix Youth Centre.
  • Duration: Approximately 2hr. 

This project is for international students who have some connection with the Maribyrnong area. But don’t worry if you don’t have some connection, let us know, we’ll still have some exciting activities you can participate in!
